A Taste of the Caribbean in Charlotte.

I traveled the scenic route to Charlotte recently and opted for the adventure of alternative accommodations. Though my stay was short, something inside of me suggested I embrace the opportunity to experience Ms. Elsies Caribbean Bed and Breakfast. I found it quite by accident, in the midst of my search for somewhere to stay near South Park. I pondered the potential lack of privacy, wondering if I was willing to walk into someone else’s home as a guest, rather than relish anonymously in my own king room at the Renaissance. After one conversation with Cheryl, I was hooked, booked and ready to check in immediately.

I stayed in the queen suite, and really felt like royalty! I was literally welcomed with open arms and marveled at my hostess’ masterful meanderings of how this magical place came to be. From the portrait of Ms. Elsie, her grandmother, over the fireplace to the fluffy white robe hanging in my closet, my Barbados lemonade upon arrival to the beautiful breakfast plate arranged like artwork in front of me, everything about this place says LOVE.

I was in awe of everything around me, and even set my alarm to rise before the sun did to absorb the ambiance of this amazing place. I could hear my hostess quietly placing purple plates on the table in preparation for my beautiful breakfast. I basked in the candlelight from the table and the moonlight from the windows as I admired and absorbed the Caribbean spirit of this special magical space.
I could certainly relate to Ms. Cheryl’s only complaint about hosting her humble abode: I can’t get my guests to leave! I didn’t want to leave either, and will be back ASAP!

The ride itself was wonderful as well. Winding roads and rolling hills of constantly changing scenery took me through Moore, Montgomery, Stanly and Cabarrus counties, including sections of the Uwharrie Forrest. The fall foliage was fabulous, flashing like fire against the back drop of a dark and dreary day. The rural two lane highway was a welcome respite from my typical travels on the interstate.
My ride home was a complete contrast to the rainy ride just one day before. Blue sky filled with sunshine and wispy white clouds welcomed me on my way back home. I stopped to shop along the way, starting at my favorite family vineyard in Albemarle, followed by a treasure hunt through thrift stores in small towns along the way.

There is always an adventure awaiting; all we have to do is notice! Take an alternative route to a familiar destination, and notice the newness around you. Explore everything and enjoy the ambiance of where ever you are. Though we may not always travel to new territory, a new perspective can permanently impact our view. The excitement of our journey is not always in seeing new places, but sometimes simply in seeing with new eyes. Enjoy!
