No News is Good News!

I had to chuckle as I watched the news last week.  The top story was the weather. Others included stories about heating and air companies staying busy and the hardware stores stocking and selling supplies for cold weather. At first I thought it was absurd.  Then I realized it was awesome!  No news really is good news! How often have you tuned into the local news to hear them reporting GOOD news? Not often.  Unfortunately, good news doesn’t sell. Later in the broadcast was a story about robbers leaving an apology note for making a mess.
Then it was the story of the breath taking rescue in the subway;   a woman fainted and fell onto the track of an oncoming train, and a brave man jumped onto the track and carried her to safety. Perhaps things are looking up.:  the world really is a good place.  People are paying attention to what goes right, and when we look for what goes right, we can usually find it, because we find more of whatever we expect to see.  Not only are good things happening, people are talking about it and others are taking note. How often have you asked a friend or colleague ‘what’s new?’  and the response is ‘nothing.’? ‘Nothing new’ can be a good thing; it can mean we are clipping along in life, enjoying an even keel with minimal worries and much to be thankful for.  It can mean that we spend our days doing what we want to do instead of what we are forced to as a result of circumstances beyond our control. It may suggest that we are focused on what works and not on what is lacking in our lives.
This week the news media was all about Surperbowl Sunday, and the volume of chips, nachos and guacamole that will be consumed in a few short (though they may seem very long) hours.  I don’t care much about the game, it’s the camaraderie and the commercials I come to the party for. I was pleased to see that positivity permeated the paid advertising as well.  The Coke commercial suggested we look at the world differently and ‘open happiness.’  Another one suggested we get happy by ‘turning the frown the other way around’ and demonstrated spreading good vibes, through actions as well as actual words painted on a coffee mug.  Of course my favorite was the baby Budweiser Clydesdale, coming back to his trainer to express his love and loyalty.   Even CBS acknowledged themselves for doing ‘original reporting’.  Reporting good news really is original!  Hopefully that will become a new media trend!
I don’t know about you, but I like the fact that no news is good news and I plan to continue to report it!
